Morris Animal Foundation (MAF) is a global leader in supporting studies to find solutions to serious health threats to animals. Over the last 73 years, MAF invested more than $136 million in 2,780+ studies that have improved the health and quality of life for dogs, cats, horses and wildlife around the world. Within that total, $48 million has supported over 1,060 studies to help dogs. Dr. Mark Morris founded Morris Animal Foundation in 1948. Morris was a small town NJ doctor with veterinary vision. He was one of the first to suggest a clinician could use urine or blood to predict disease in dogs and cats, developing several medical tests himself. In the 1930s he discovered that he could manage a dog's kidney ailments by creating a diet low in salt and protein. He used this to prolong the life of Buddy, the first U.S. seeing eye dog. Encouraged by Buddy's blind owner, Morris began manufacturing his special diet during WWII when tin cans were quite scarce. His formulas eventually became Hills Prescription Diets. The new company's success allowed Morris to fulfill his dream to improve animal welfare. The contract with Hills stipulated that one half cent of each can sold go to the Buddy Foundation (later renamed for Morris).

As an alternative, researchers will evaluate a wearable wireless collar device to help improve treatment of canine epilepsy. The device, adapted for dogs from a human epilepsy therapy device, stimulates a nerve in the neck that connects the brain to the heart. The investigators will test whether the device effectively causes detectable changes in heart rate and brainwaves in dogs. Identifying noninvasive therapies for epileptic dogs will increase the available treatments for this frustrating disease. -University of Guelph, Canada. 3) Designing a novel heartworm vaccine: At least one million dogs in the U.S. are infected annually with heartworm, and cases have increased by more than 20 percent since 2016. The disease is caused by an early form of a parasitic roundworm injected by infected mosquitoes and can be fatal if not treated. Preventive measures have been the best way to avoid the costs and risk of heartworm treatment. The recent emergence of drug resistance in North America has caused concern for both pet owners and veterinarians. A new supplement is needed if vitamin D therapy is to be helpful to dogs with cancer. One candidate is a form of vitamin D called calcidiol. There were three parts to this completed study: determine how much calcidiol is in commercial dog food; determine if calcidiol is more effective increasing vitamin D levels than vitamin D3; look for vitamin D receptors in cancerous canine tissue. -University of Missouri 7) Working toward immunotherapy for for osteosarcoma: This is the most common bone tumor in large- and giant-breed dogs, with an estimated 10,000 new cases diagnosed annually. Immunotherapy is a treatment that uses the dog's own immune system to combat cancer. Typical bone cancer therapy includes amputation of the affected limb followed by chemotherapy, but most dogs succumb to the spread of the disease within two years. Recently immunotherapy has been a breakthrough in many types of cancer, but few studies looked into immunotherapy used for osteosarcoma.
