Acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma means worsening asthma and lung function.

"Bronchial asthma is a medical disorder which makes the lungs' airways swell and shrink. This swelling causes the airway to generate too much mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe and causes coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing," explains Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Grover, Head of critical care & Pulmonology - CK Birla Hospital, Gurgaon.

"Bronchial asthma exacerbation means whenever there is an acute worsening of an already diagnosed case of bronchial asthma, in which the symptoms are not being treated despite taking medicines. Acute worsening of already normal symptoms of Asthma ike chest tightness, wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing is known as acute exacerbation," Dr Grover adds.
